A two-faced race for the Italian Alpine skiing team, which got off to a flying start after Giovanni Franzoni 's first-place finish in the downhill. Unfortunately, the Italians' hopes of another medal, this time in the new men's combined category, vanished after Alex Vinatzer 's disappointing performance in the slalom.

The Bolzano native immediately demonstrated some difficulty on the Stelvio descent, partly due to rising temperatures, which caused Italy to slip from first to seventh place in the standings. "I apologized to Giovanni," Vinatzer said after the race. "He put in an extraordinary performance; he deserved nothing less than a medal. Gio is a thoroughbred, while I, fearing a mistake, held back too much at the start. This race was the slap in the face that woke me up."

A slightly better result for Dominik Parisi and Tommaso Sala , the other Italian pair competing, who placed fifth. The day's star was Switzerland , taking home both the gold medal (Von Allmen-Nef) and the silver (Odermatt/Meillard), the latter shared with Austria (Kriechmayr-Feller).
