Migrations, returns and new farewells: Sardinia between departures and gaps to fill
A meeting in Cagliari explores the data and faces behind the new migratory flows from Italy and Sardinia, between depopulation, identity and prospects of returnPer restare aggiornato entra nel nostro canale Whatsapp
Who leaves Sardinia today? And why? Are they temporary escapes, dreams with an expiration date, or departures without return?
The migratory phenomenon, which has profoundly marked Italian history, returns forcefully to the center of contemporary debate, no longer just as a welcome, but as a new and silent diaspora.
On Thursday 12 June 2025, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, the Fondazione di Sardegna in Cagliari will host a public event dedicated to the theme of migration, with a particular focus on the regional and national context.
The initiative, promoted by the Acli of Sardinia and Crei-Acli, intends to shed light on an increasingly complex reality: Italian emigration in the 21st century.
If Italy is today a country of arrival for many, it also remains – and increasingly – a country of departure. In particular, in Sardinia we are witnessing a new migratory cycle that, according to the data, exceeds in size that of immigration .
The result? Depopulation, demographic aging and loss of human, social and cultural capital.
During the meeting, two fundamental reports will be presented: the Rapporto Italiani nel Mondo 2024 of the Fondazione Migrantes and the Rapporto Mete of Crei- Acli, both key tools for reading the changes underway. The data analyses will offer a detailed picture of the outgoing flows, the chosen destinations, the socio-demographic profiles of those leaving and the implications for the territories of origin.
Speakers include: Delfina Licata, editor of the Migrantes Report, who will illustrate the numbers and trends of “Italies elsewhere,” with a look at the characteristics of new migrants and issues related to citizenship. Alongside her, Matteo Bracciali of the Federazione Acli Internazionali, who will delve into the dynamics of citizenship in an increasingly diasporic Italy.
Particular attention will be paid to the Sardinian case. Researcher Marisa Fois will present a detailed analysis of the migratory flow from Sardinia: who leaves, from where, towards where. A map of the Sardinian movement in 2024, useful for understanding not only the numbers, but also the reasons.
Vania Statzu, responsible for the Mete report, will finally bring an integrated look at depopulation, migration and economic impacts. The analysis will be accompanied by policy proposals and possible intervention strategies, in order not to limit ourselves to reading the phenomenon, but to open the way to concrete responses.
The works will be opened by Mauro Carta, president of Acli Sardegna, and Monsignor Giuseppe Baturi, metropolitan archbishop of Cagliari and general secretary of the Italian Episcopal Conference. The meeting will be moderated by journalist Filippo Petrucci.
