Shortly after the global success of “Parasite,” champion at Cannes and the Oscars in 2020, it was immediately clear that we could no longer do without Bong Joon-ho. The brilliant Korean director has recently enjoyed a second flowering thanks to the attention shown by the Western market, ready to rediscover his filmography to fill up on irony, originality and character as only he has been able to demonstrate.
After almost five years of silence, his latest “Mickey 17” is finally getting ready to debut next year, and the desire to find out what he has done this time is becoming more and more unbearable. Welcoming for the first time a cast composed almost exclusively of Hollywood stars - with the charismatic Robert Pattinson as the protagonist and names of the caliber of Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun and Toni Collette - the sci-fi thriller has immediately placed itself at the top of the most anticipated titles for 2025.
Based on the 2022 novel “Mickey 7” by Edward Ashton, last month we got a first and significant taste of the intergalactic atmospheres that await us with the first trailer, in addition to the plot details that emerged from the synopsis reported below: «A disposable employee is part of a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world of Niflheim. Whenever there is a mission too dangerous, even suicidal, the crew turns to Mickey17. After the death of an iteration, a new body is regenerated with most of its memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey17 realizes the terms of his agreement and why the position was vacant before he arrived».
Already last year, the first previews of the project raised a lot of optimism. Interviewed by Gamesradar+, actress Naomi Ackie spoke of an extremely rewarding experience, praising the quality of the script and the human relationship woven on set: «The cast is incredible and the director is one of the most brilliant and kind men I've ever had the privilege of working with. The story really warms your heart, it's crazy and fun. We had so much fun on that set, there were so many laughs».
And on the stylistic direction the director has taken, he added: "I think what I loved most about making this film was the level of detail, how intricate it can be. The story is incredible, but how he chooses to tell it is the deciding factor, he's a director who has a lot of influence on the work. He knows what he wants, and he's very specific about it, and that's quite liberating in a way. I really love the man."
Since it was completed a long time ago, many have wondered what could have justified the delay of “Mickey 17” in theaters. Joon-ho himself gave an exhaustive answer in a recent interview, explaining that additional time was needed to closely follow the work process in all its phases. In this way, he assured, the idea behind the project was respected exactly and complete creative control was maintained: «I was allowed to cut the film as I wanted from beginning to end». The director also guaranteed that the editing operations, although long, were fluid and respectful of the filmed material. The expressive choices, therefore, were protected from invasive interventions or compromises imposed by the production studios.
Further curiosity was aroused by Mark Ruffalo's stories about the work he did with the director. Interviewed by Deadline, the star who recently appeared in the visionary "Poor Creatures!" seems destined to play more and more over-the-top roles. Clarifying first of all that he never wanted to avoid characters of this type, he said: "No one asked me to do them, and so this is the only time I've been seen in a part that I don't think many people would have seen me in. It's not so much about avoiding them, I've never had them. Now they'll ask me, hopefully." And anticipating some details about the part he will play in "Mickey 17", he said: "He's another fucking psychopath. This guy is a dictator, a fascist, a narcissist; we know the type!".
