Article 1 rejected, Salvini: «Italian pensioners and workers will not risk paying for the bailout of foreign banks»
The Chamber rejects the ratification of the agreement to amend the European Stability Mechanism. The votes in favor were 72, 184 against, 44 abstentions, rejecting the first article of the text.
Among those in favor were the deputies of the Democratic Party, IV and Action while in the opposition M5s voted against. The majority was also divided on the vote: FdI and Lega voted against. The deputies of FI, Avs and Noi Moderati abstained.
«Parliament rejects the ESM: Italian pensioners and workers will not risk paying for the bailout of foreign banks. And never mind if they get angry on the left. A League battle fought for years and finally won. Carry on like this, with your head held high and without fear", writes the leader of the League Matteo Salvini on Instagram.
«The ESM is fully functional in its original configuration - say sources from Palazzo Chigi - i.e. to support Member States in financial difficulty. The choice of the Italian Parliament not to proceed with ratification could be an opportunity to start a reflection at European level on new and possible changes to the treaty, which would be more useful to the entire Eurozone".
