"I come from a political community that has often been accused of spreading hatred. Look at the same people celebrating and justifying the intentional murder of a young man who was guilty of courageously defending his ideas." Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said this, speaking at the UDC party's national party in Rome, referring to the murder of Charlie Kirk, the Maga influencer who was shot dead during a rally.
"We want to demonstrate that politics can be authoritative, credible, capable of dedication, capable of sacrifice, capable of being conducted with love, for what one believes in, for one's nation, for one's people. Look, I want to say this at a time when hatred and political violence are dramatically returning to the forefront, bringing many issues to light," the Prime Minister added.
And while the prime minister has tried to maintain balance in her statements, Roberto Vannacci, deputy secretary of the League, is more unbalanced. He took to social media while Meloni was speaking in Rome. Relaunching already debunked fake news, the general wrote: "And so today we discovered that Charlie Kirk's killer is a known anti-fascist. He had the words 'Bella Ciao' scratched on his bullets, and at home he had various progressive and LGBT references. He hated those who thought differently; he was intolerant, like almost all left-wingers. The 'field of tolerance, peace, inclusion, diversity' (all except diversity of thought, which is never admitted!) is a field that kills. Political violence today is always left-wing," the League member argues. " Progressives represent a danger to democracy. And in Italy they are no different: let us remember Ilaria Salis, convicted several times and under investigation for smashing the heads of those who disagreed with her. Professor Christian Raimo , who has publicly admitted that he teaches how to beat up neo-Nazis, urban violence, squatting, the "casseurs" who destroy our cities, graffiti artists and defacers of common property, those who block traffic and railways, those who set fire to buses, those who occupy universities, censorship, demonizing the adversary, beatings...where there is violence, there is the left. I believe the time has come for the left to question its own violent and totalitarian nature.
