A decision weighed until the last moment. Because there have already been two meetings, the agenda is full of other international commitments and internal problems would force her to remain in Italy. But in the end , for Giorgia Meloni, the "pleasure" prevailed, as she herself defined it in a press conference at the beginning of the year, of being there when Donald Trump is sworn in as the 47th president of the United States .
Matteo Salvini, on the other hand, will not be there, even if the League will participate together with the delegation of the European Patriots, because the deputy prime minister - his party has announced - will remain in Italy to deal with the railways and the alleged sabotage .
The Prime Minister is therefore preparing for her second trip to the US in just over two weeks, also to avoid offending the tycoon who had personally invited her in Paris to attend the inauguration ceremony for his second term at the White House. Being there would once again underline the "privileged" relationship between Italy and the US , which the Prime Minister cultivated even when Democrat Joe Biden was in the White House.
Meloni should be the only head of a European government to participate . It is possible, but there is no official confirmation, that in this case too the prime minister met with Ursula von der Leyen, as she did before the blitz in Florida (largely linked to the negotiations for the release of Cecilia Sala from the Iranian prison of Evin, which took place a few days later): even in Brussels it is known that Meloni is among Trump's most appreciated interlocutors on the continent.
It should be - for the second time - a fairly quick passage, no more than one night at most, at least in the intentions. But the program remains confidential, except for the presence on Capitol Hill.
Only many hours after the prime minister made her reservation, Salvini's decision also arrived. The Minister of Transport "has chosen to remain in Italy in light of what is emerging on the railways front after the complaint of the FS group and the complaint for an attack on transport confirmed in these hours" but, the League says, "he is confident of being able to go to the United States as soon as possible".
