We are writing to you as parents and residents of Cagliari to bring to your attention an urgent issue that is causing great concern among families. With the start of the school year now upon us, temperatures in the city continue to be exceptionally high. Most schools do not have air conditioning, making classrooms unlivable and a risk to the health of children and staff. For this reason, we have sent a formal request to the Mayor of Cagliari to consider postponing the start date of classes. We attach below the text of the letter sent to the Municipality, relying on your help in giving maximum visibility to this initiative, which we believe is essential for the protection of public health. Dear Mayor,
I am writing to you as a parent residing in the Municipality of Cagliari to bring to your attention a matter of fundamental importance regarding the health, well-being, and safety of our children and all school staff.
As is sadly evident, our City is facing an exceptional heat wave, with temperatures well above the seasonal average. Within most of the schools in the municipality, especially in nursery, primary, and lower secondary schools, the classrooms lack adequate air conditioning or ventilation systems to mitigate such high temperatures.
Carrying out normal teaching activities in these conditions not only seriously compromises students' ability to concentrate and learn, but also exposes younger children and vulnerable individuals to concrete health risks (in the case of my daughter who is diabetic), such as heat stroke and dehydration.
Many municipalities in Italy and in our own region have already adopted emergency and contingent mayoral ordinances to address similar climate emergencies.
For these reasons, I formally ask you to consider issuing an ordinance to postpone the opening of schools of all levels in the Cagliari area by a few days, or in any case until the weather forecast indicates an acceptable drop in temperatures, thus ensuring a return to the classroom in dignified and safe conditions.
