Mattia Furlani won the gold medal in the long jump at the World Athletics Championships currently underway in Tokyo .

A splendid performance by the Italian, who with a personal best of 8.39m, won Italy's fifth medal at the World Championships, the first gold after two silvers and two bronzes.

The 20-year-old, Olympic bronze medalist in Paris and gold medalist at the World Indoor Championships, performed flawlessly, consistently jumping over 8 meters after an initial failure. But he needed the extra measure of control, that 8.39 on his fourth jump that overtook Jamaica's Gayle and China's Shi.

Immediately after his final jump, Furlani went to celebrate with his staff and his mother, the coach, wrapped in a tricolor flag. "Number one, we are number one," he shouted to his staff .
