Måneskin still make history and for the first time an Italian group takes home an award at the prestigious MTV awards for videomusic.

With the song "I wanna be your slave" the Roman glam rock band won in the "Best Alternative Video" category and then took the stage at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, for an electrifying live performance of the new hit. "Supermodel".

"It is extraordinary - said the vocalist of the band, Damiano David - We did not expect it. It is an honor. There were so many great artists in the competition".

The recognition comes in the wake of the other successes of Victoria, Damiano, Ethan and Thomas: from Sanremo and Eurovision 2021, to appearances on the Tonight Show of Jimmy Fallon and Saturday Night Live, the stage of the Rolling Stones last November and Coachella in April. For Måneskin it was their MTV VMA debut both as a performer and as candidates. The four Italians had also received a nomination as best new artist, a category in which the American actress Dove Cameron won.

The most prestigious award of the evening, video of the year , went to Taylor Swift for the short “All too well”. Taylor has announced a new album that will be released on October 21st: the first of unreleased material after "Folklore" and "Evermore", released five months apart in 2020.

From Madison Square Garden, where he is engaged for a series of 15 concerts, Harry Styles thanked for the award for the best album of the year, "Harry's House". Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny did the same from Yankee Stadium after being honored as the best artist.

LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow (winner of the summer song “First class”) took turns on stage to present the evening. Nicki took home two statuettes in the shape of an astronaut (the Moonperson): a career award and one for best hip hop video, while the Red Hot and Chili Peppers won the Global Icon Award in celebration of their long career and then again for best rock video (“Black Summer”).

The Thai rapper Lisa, the youngest of the Blackpinks, was awarded for "Lalisa", while the Brazilian Anitta collected the statuette for the best Latin video.

Surprisingly, Johnny Depp also went on stage: less than three months after the verdict of the trial-show that opposed him to his ex-wife Amber Heard, the ex Pirate of the Caribbean gave a very short performance at the beginning of the show with the face digitally superimposed on the helmet of a "Moonperson": "You know what? I needed to work," the actor told the crowd at the Prudential, to appear again after the commercial: "Hey Vma, back to the music, right?" .
