Hands off the nativity scene . Fratelli d'Italia aims to block the representation of the Nativity in all schools with a bill filed in the Senate, first signatory Lavinia Mennunni .

The provision establishes that it is "prohibited to prevent initiatives promoted by parents, students or competent school bodies to continue activities linked to traditional celebrations linked to Christmas and Christian Easter such as the nativity scene, plays and other events".

The aim is to "remember the profound meaning of humanity and the relationship that binds them to the Italian national identity". The law, we read in the introduction, «intervenes on respect for Christian religious traditions and the symbols that distinguish them. In particular, as regards Christmas and Easter, the reference goes to the setting up of the nativity scene, the carrying out of the related ceremonies, the celebratory plays and performances ".

For school directors who transgress , "disciplinary proceedings will be initiated according to the rules" .

Antonio Giannelli, president of the Principals' Association , rejects the measure: « We must certainly keep in mind the traditions of the country - he comments - but imposing them by law is out of place . In any case, there will be a way, in the parliamentary debate, to carefully evaluate what needs to be done."
