The Fondazione Treno storico della Sardegna was born to give new impetus to cultural tourism L linked to sustainable mobility and the value of old trains.

The Regional Council has approved the proposal made by the municipal administration of Mandas for the establishment of the Foundation which involves the Municipalities which are the headquarters of the historic Sardinian train . The request of the mayors and Arst was accepted by the president of the Region Christian Solinas and by the regional councilor for Transport Antonio Moro.

On 6 April, right in the village of Alta Trexenta, there was the signing of the Covenant of Mayors for the historic train of Sardinia. On 19 April, after discussions with the representatives of the local administrations and with the Arst management, the project proposal was presented. Preliminary stages for the approval of the law which effectively kicks off the establishment of the Foundation.

"We are writing an important page in history - says the mayor of Mandas Umberto Oppus -, thus a new alliance for the historical-tourist promotion of the area is born".

The Municipalities of Mandas, Meana Sardo, Sorgono, Macomer, Elini, Bosa, Aritzo, Isili, Sassari, Calangianus, Nulvi, Bortigiadas, Laerru, Osilo, Luras, Belvì, Tempio, Martis, Laconi, Nurallao, Arzara, Lanusei are involved in the project and Anci Sardinia.

The prerogatives of the newly formed Foundation are various : to commit to ensuring that a fundamental role is recognized for local authorities; the signing of an agreement between the mayors to ask the Region for the transfer to the Municipalities of Stations, roadman's offices and former railway lands not functional for operation for an integrated project to enhance the railway heritage; the discussion on the funds of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (Pnrr) intended for the enhancement of the historic lines.

"62 million euros have been allocated - continues Oppus - it is our intention to ask the Region to undertake to solicit the national government to obtain the other 160 million euros functional to the arrangement of all the lines".
