Making films as a key to overcoming discomfort, anxiety and anguish. Or small and large traumas.

This is what lies at the basis of the project previewed in the congress hall of the Faculty of Medicine at the University Citadel of Cagliari. And which results in a film that is also a therapeutic goal ascertained by the neuropsychiatric staff who measured some parameters of the protagonists, boys aged between 11 and 17 years.

In three weeks of the filmmaking workshop, the experts announce, self-esteem has grown and anxiety and depression have decreased. It also improves social awareness.

Just a few more days to record progress on hyperactivity and oppositionality "but it is clear - underlines Alessandro Zuddas, director of the Clinic of Childhood and Adolescent Neuropsychiatry at Brotzu - that if self-esteem has grown, there are also positive effects on these two. factors ".

The coordination of the laboratory was entrusted for the artistic part to the director Massimo Guglielmi, author of several productions also for Rai, and for the scientific part to the neuropsychiatrist Antonella Gagliano, at the helm of a team of mental health specialists in developmental age. The project is called Filo di Arianna and involved the University, Brotzu and the Metropolitan City of Cagliari.

"Ariadne's thread because there are no labyrinths with no way out - explains Gagliano - It is a message to young people who are going through a difficult time so that they never lose the certainty that the way out can be found. psychiatric emergency, aggravated by the pandemic, which leads many children, at this moment between 30 and 40% of the school-age population, to go through moments of sadness and anguish. A condition that makes it necessary to integrate diagnosis and treatment with opportunities for growth in non-healthcare environments but designed to give the opportunity to live positive experiences together with peers ".

Three weeks with over five hours of daily work between Monte Claro, Calamosca, the historic center and the promenade of the shopping center. The boys also wrote their stories which then, in a tribute to director Krzysztof Kieślowski, became four films directed by four new directors entitled White, Red, Blue and Black. On the momentum, one of them also wrote and directed a short film commercial against violence at home presented at a conference in Milan.

All the young protagonists of the project are happy. In a final press conference after the screenings, some of them said they were fascinated by the camera and also wanted to consider the possibility of working in this sector.

Beyond the professional opportunities, an experience that has allowed young people to try their hand at a new experience. And to grow together.

"Usually - notes director Guglielmi - films are made by adults who tell children. Here children tell their stories for themselves through cinema".
