"I'm moving to Spain. I need to spend more time walking the streets, thinking about my problems, without being harassed."
Mahmood reveals it in a lengthy interview with Butt magazine. Two wins at Sanremo, a second place at Eurovision, platinum records galore, but the singer-songwriter, who grew up in Milan—his mother, a Sardinian from Orosei, and his father, an Egyptian—hasn't forgotten his early days: "I signed a contract and started writing songs. No hits, no fame. They treated me like shit. They wanted me to release a terrible, super-pop song. And they told me I had to listen to what was on the radio. I worked in bars just to earn a little money. And I started writing songs for other artists. Universal saw how good I was and signed me to their songwriting division. No one believed in 'Soldi'. They said 'Cute. Weird.' But then it became the most streamed Italian song of all time ."
Life in Milan hasn't been the same for a while now: "I don't like it when people film me dancing. Maybe I'm drunk. I don't want to look bad in front of the camera. I feel like a white tiger in a zoo ."
An interview in which he talks about his great love for his mother, Anna Frau: "My greatest blessing in life was my mother." And about his sex life, without filters: "The weirdest situation I've ever found myself in? I once had sex with this person, amazing sex blah blah blah. And afterward, he said to me, 'My kids are huge fans of yours.' And I thought, 'What the…' I didn't know what was happening, but I was having fun ."
Finally, he confirms that he will be suspending live performances until 2026: "I'm interested in music. I've stopped touring and releasing new songs because I really need time to find new inspiration, a new vision that I want to share with people ."
