The Regional Council failed to find the desired unity to reject the arrival of mafia bosses in Sardinian prisons. The approved motion was supported by parts of the opposition (Reformers and Sardinia at the Center 20Venti) but not by Forza Italia and Brothers of Italy . In particular, the FdI party strongly criticized the regional president's commitment on this front.
Harsh tones were expressed on the eve of M5S leader Giuseppe Conte's arrival in Sardinia and two days before the rally organized directly by the governor for Saturday in Cagliari's Piazza Palazzo. "President Todde is using this issue to distract public opinion and is exploiting it," said deputy group leader Fausto Piga. "FdI's position is not to create alarmism. Citizens' concerns are legitimate and should be listened to, but they cannot be used to fuel a political conflict. I believe the concerned citizens, but not President Todde's real concerns. First she calls a solo demonstration, then talks about unity. This is just propaganda. The issue could have been addressed together, with a shared path, not through confrontation."
The motion, first signed by Roberto Deriu of the Democratic Party, nevertheless passed with 33 votes in favor. The novelty is that, based on Article 51 of the Statute, it will go directly to Parliament. Among other things, it calls for the amendment of Article 41-bis of Law 354 of 1975, which identifies island areas as the preferred location for prisoners under the special regime, and urges Parliament to establish uniform criteria for the territorial distribution of prisoners. Alessandra Todde, for her part, once again highlighted the scale of the problem: "In Italy, there are approximately 720 prisoners under the 41-bis regime, and 90 are already in Sardinian prisons. According to the government's plan, this number should rise to 240. But for the Sardinian government, these numbers are unsustainable, especially because we are unable to provide care for these prisoners with the financial resources of the Region."
