There is also the San Gavino Monreale school among the eight finalists of the Mad for Science 2022 national competition scheduled for May 26 in Milan.

To be precise, we are talking about the Marconi - Lussu scientific high school with the option of applied sciences, which achieved the final with the project " Helichrysum: the flower of the sun, remedy and resource ".

Among the finalists there was also a school in Pescara, one in Mugnano di Napoli, one in Meda (Monza and Brianza), one in Rho (Milan), one in Pesaro, one in Casale Monferrato (Alessandria), and one in Molfetta (Bari).

The award, promoted by the DiaSorin Foundation , sees the finalists discuss the theme "Biotechnologies at the service of human health and the environment", with the elaboration of 5 experimental experiences consistent with the proposed theme, or how biotechnologies can be used in the laboratory or in the field to ensure the health of people and the planet.
The first two winners will be awarded with the implementation of the biolab (for a maximum value of 50,000 and 25,000 euros respectively) and the supply of related materials (up to a maximum of 5,000 and 2,500 euros respectively per year for 5 years from 2022).

There is also a special Communication Award to those who will be able to better disseminate their project, consisting of 15 thousand euros for the purchase of laboratory equipment and materials. All finalists will also be awarded with 10 thousand euros.

As for the San Gavino school, it was admitted to the final for the second consecutive time.The project, developed with the support of the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences of the University of Cagliari and Enea and the collaboration of Forestas and the Institute Agrario di Villacidro, proposes the sustainable redevelopment of a disused mining site , the Laveria Brassey, exploiting the phytostabilizing properties of Helichrysum in association with microbial species native to the site.

Professor Matteo Pisanu coordinated the team, made up of third and fourth high school students.
