The Veneretta , the mysterious trachyte statuette , found in a cave in the S'Adde valley 75 years ago, considered the oldest anthropomorphic representation in Sardinia, becomes the official symbol of the city of Macomer. The mayor, Riccardo Uda, announced it, saying: «The city of Macomer is rich in ancient history, ancient and also contemporary and there are many unique material testimonies in the Sardinian panorama: from the betili mammellati of Tamuli to the numerous nuraghes among which that of Santa Barbara stands out.
The Veneretta is one of these that, for its characteristics and importance, seemed to us to represent more than others the sense of the long history of the city and the territory. We wanted to take this meaning of the Veneretta as a symbol of this long history and give it to those who with their work continue the history of the city of Macomerese or to the guests who come to visit us has for us the important meaning of transmitting the values of a hard-working community that has made the history of Sardinia and will continue to do so".
In addition to sporting merits, a copy of the Veneretta is also awarded to reward deserving people and associations that bring the name of the town to the fore. Fabiana Cugusi, councilor for culture: "That statuette is not only an important archaeological find, but represents the remote history of Macomer and the entire island. Even if it is preserved in the archaeological museum of Cagliari, that precious and mysterious object was found in Macomer, so it is not only an important object for scholars, but it is a symbol that belongs to us".
