The EU High Representative, Josep Borrell, in a letter sent to the twenty-seven member states indicated Luigi Di Maio as EU envoy for the Gulf .

"After a careful evaluation, I consider Luigi Di Maio the most suitable candidate for the post of EU envoy for the Gulf", writes Borrell. " As a former Italian foreign minister, Luigi Di Maio has the necessary international political profile for this role ," he points out. “His extensive contacts will enable him to engage with relevant actors at the appropriate level. We must maintain the momentum of our enhanced engagement with the Gulf. For this I count on the support to Di Maio to implement our strategic partnership with the partners of the Gulf", concludes Borrell, proposing the appointment of Di Maio for an initial period of 21 months, "from 1 June 2023 until 28 February 2025" .

The letter begins the selection phase which has seen the former minister of the Draghi government overcome the competing candidates. According to what has been learned, the ratification of Di Maio's appointment - now taken for granted - is not foreseen tomorrow at the Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg and, in any case, it will not take place in a very short time. Indeed, it must be endorsed by the 27 Member States.

But Borrell's choice infuriates the League: «The Italians voted: they chose and continue to choose the center-right, not the left or the grillini. That of Brussels is a shameful indication, an insult to Italy and to thousands of clever diplomats», unspecified “sources” of the Carroccio declare .
