Today, 3 out of 4 job offers are for technical or practical jobs, but over 40% of young people reject them outright. This is why there are some job profiles that are considered almost “unfindable”.
The specialized portal Skuola.net, together with ELIS , a non-profit organization specialized in job orientation and training, has created the top ten of these positions that remain… unemployed in our country. «A paradox – we read in the report – not only Italian, but in which Italy excels: on the one hand, in fact, open positions in the technical and operational fields are growing, on the other hand, however, there is an increasing lack of trained people – or even just interested – in filling them. A short circuit that risks slowing down the energy transition, digitalization, public mobility and even tourism».
"It's not just a question of salaries or conditions - explain Skuola.net and ELIS -, but also (and above all) of orientation and social perception: many young people shy away from jobs that they consider tiring, not very "glamorous" or without a future. It is no coincidence that 41% of high school students categorically refuse to do a practical technical job after graduation".
Here is the ranking of the 10 most “unfindable” jobs and the positions most sought after by companies in 2025, with the attached motivation present in the report:
- Public transport driver : despite the progress of autonomous driving, humans are still needed to drive public transport. As long as we can convince new recruits: bus, tram and subway drivers are now hard to find: this profession confirms its permanence in the rankings again this year.
- Railway maintenance worker : the railway maintenance worker is the one who intervenes on tracks, switches and railway structures, often in teams and with night shifts. An essential profession for the safety, efficiency and punctuality of the service and which also in 2025 is confirmed among the most sought after of all.
- Fiber Optic Technician : Ultrafast Internet doesn't install itself. The fiber optic technician is the one who takes care of the installation and maintenance of high-speed cabling and connections. A fundamental figure for homes, schools and companies, who combines old construction skills with the most modern digital skills.
- Photovoltaic technician : it's easy to say "let's install solar panels". The issue is much more complex, which is why we need technicians specialized in the design, installation, maintenance and repair of photovoltaic systems that, in addition to the panels, also carry batteries, inverters and many other devices that require well-trained (and paid) professionals.
- Electrical Operator : the electrician is confirmed as one of the unobtainable even in 2025. As it happens in the homes of ordinary citizens, it is not easy to find electricians in businesses either. In particular, electrical installers, figures who deal with ordinary maintenance and extraordinary interventions on low and medium voltage distribution systems, both civil and industrial. Guaranteeing the supply of energy to homes and work environments.
- Construction Site Manager : is the “conductor” of a construction site, the technical and management point of reference that ensures the progress of the works in compliance with the rules and deadlines. A crucial figure that combines high technical level skills - accessible also with a diploma - and organizational skills, always in demand this year also because of the “many things” that we will have to build under the push of the PNRR.
- Maintenance/production worker : the entire peninsula is full of mechanics and machines: and not only for its manufacturing sector, which is still the second in Europe in terms of turnover. To keep these mechanical and mechatronic works of art afloat, hordes of qualified technicians are needed for production lines, mechanical maintenance, quality control. But, once again, the number of candidates does not keep pace with the expected generational turnover and the growing demand.
- Front-Office Agent : always in contact with the public, manages check-in, reservations, reception and customer service. A central figure in hotels, airports and citizen services, but which today suffers from the lack of attractiveness of the sector and the poor propensity for relational soft skills.
- Waiter : it seems like a simple job, but it is not. Serving tables requires speed, courtesy, organization and the ability to manage stress. But also a lot of professionalism especially in all those structures that revolve around the world of luxury catering and hotel hospitality. In short, an undervalued job that today offers opportunities for professional growth and, why not, entrepreneurial growth.
- Retail Manager : once called “clerk”, today it is much more. The retail manager is a professional figure who works in the retail sector, with the responsibility of managing various aspects, including the management of sales outlets and items present, customer service, product promotion and personnel management. A dynamic and operational job that however requires vision, digital skills and entrepreneurial spirit. Increasingly requested, less and less chosen.
"The data confirms year after year that technical professions considered by many as a second-best choice - underlines Pietro Cum, CEO of ELIS - represent professions that are indispensable to the development of the country . They certainly require specific qualifications, but the commitment to training is repaid by real opportunities for access to the world of work. Our 'Schools of Trades', born with the Distretto Italia project, demonstrate how it is possible to offer prospects of a good job and at the same time help companies find "unobtainable" professionals. To build a bridge between talent and opportunity - concludes Cum - we therefore need to listen to the labor market in its real needs and, above all, continue to commit ourselves to a paradigm shift that leads to the rediscovery of the value of technical professions" .
