"I go out more in love with the Democratic Party than when I started". Enrico Letta said it, in his last speech as dem secretary, during the party assembly at the Antonianum Auditorium in Rome. "The attempt to replace us has failed," added Letta, who delivered a bittersweet farewell speech, choosing not to remove pebbles from her shoes, because - she said - "I keep the generosity to myself". "This - he told the assembly instead - is the day of rediscovered pride".
After the victory of the center-right in the elections of 25 September, the Democratic Party - which approved its new Manifesto - is therefore looking for a new leader.
And with Letta's greeting, the four-way challenge for the Nazarene ignites: Stefano Bonaccini, Elly Schlein, Gianni Cuperlo and Paola De Micheli are in the running.
The primaries are set for February 26 next year.
No official endorsement from the outgoing secretary: «The candidates are all convincing - he said in his speech - and I will have a hard time choosing who to vote for».
