Johnny Depp certainly needs no introduction. The star, who brought memorable characters like Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" saga to life and forged decades-long collaborations with masters like Tim Burton, suffered a sudden setback in the final years of his career—as widely reported in newspapers and on social media—due primarily to legal disputes with ex-wife Amber Heard.
With the case over, and the decision quickly made to resume his work on set, we saw him again in Maïwenn's "Jeanne du Barry" and in an unexpected return behind the camera with the biopic "Modì: Three Days on the Wings of Madness." Tireless as he was in his early career, Depp is now ready to appear in "Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol," the long-awaited return of director Ti West, who once again promises to give us a performance that is nothing short of unforgettable.
Set to debut in American theaters on November 13, the film based on Charles Dickens's short story "A Christmas Carol" will see the actor take on the role of Ebenezer Scrooge, the protagonist of a work that, since its release in 1843, has spawned over four hundred adaptations—including silent films, feature films, and animated shorts. The story follows Scrooge, a miserly and unsociable man who eventually confronts the ghosts of the past, present, and future, reflecting on the weight of his actions and the course of action he must take to save his soul. From the first photos taken during filming and reported by the Daily Mail, we discover a gray-haired, gruff, and grim Depp, almost unrecognizable at first glance. The cast also includes Ian McKellen, Rupert Grint, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, and Tramell Tillman.
Returning to CinemaCon in Las Vegas for the film's official presentation, Depp revealed his childhood obsession with Dickens's tale. Delighted at the privilege of being part of such an exciting project, he said: "It's a story that's obsessed me since I was a kid. When Ti West approached me, my first thought was, 'There's no one who can do it as well as Alastair Sim did in the 1930s or so.' It's a magical interpretation. But then I thought, 'That's no reason not to try... I think Ti has really done something very special.'"
Further piquing fans' curiosity were Sir Ian McKellen's revelations about the collaboration he developed with Depp during filming. Describing a healthy and productive work environment, he said of his colleague: "I fell in love with him. He's in great shape. Effervescent, funny, irreverent, serious, all at the same time. It was almost like a collective crush. He's very open to the other actors. There was a wonderful feeling on set." Looking forward to seeing him play Jacob Marley, the spirit of the past, he concluded about his participation in the project: "It's only been six days of filming, but it was absolutely worth it. I'm playing a ghost!"
Among his upcoming projects, Depp will also appear in a new horror film produced by Netflix. Set in England and scheduled for release this fall, the title is still largely shrouded in mystery, following the start of filming in complete secrecy in Maidstone, Kent. Among the few pieces of information available, a tip-off from an employee at the Greek Taverna Artemis pub—the location used for filming—revealed: "He's filming a new horror film that will be available on Netflix in October, but that's all we've been told so far."
Another production that would mark Depp's full return to the mainstream market is "Daydrinker," the latest project from director Mark Webb, also starring Penelope Cruz and Madelyn Cline. This thriller follows the story of a grieving bartender who becomes embroiled in a dangerous criminal network after a suspicious encounter with a client on a yacht.
Of course, we can't forget the star's possible return to the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series. Now in its sixth installment, the franchise produced by Jerry Bruckheimer plans to completely revamp itself with the next installment, the development of which is still being kept under wraps. In an interview with The Direct during the Producers Guild Awards, Bruckheimer nevertheless sought to reassure everyone about Depp, stating, "No, no, no. Johnny... if it were up to me, he'd be in it." It will therefore be best to wait a little longer to find out whether the actor will return to play the iconic character, perhaps with a brief cameo or, at best, in a major role.
