One of the most talented performers of his generation, having profoundly influenced the film scene of the 1990s and early 2000s, Jim Carrey is still considered one of the leading stars of the Hollywood scene. Starting with performances in Canadian clubs and making his debut on the stage of Saturday Night Live after moving to Los Angeles, the star reached the highest level of fame starting from the unexpected success of the “Ace Ventura” films and the hilarious “The Mask”, immediately making an impression for his extraordinary transformative and performing skills.
In addition to his frequent appearances in comedies such as “Dumb and Dumber” or “Me, Myself and Irene,” Carrey has demonstrated no less skill in dramatic interpretations; think of the Oscar-nominated masterpiece “The Truman Show,” the incredible identification achieved in “Man on the Moon” or the delicate and poignant “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” Preferring in recent years a detached lifestyle and less inclined to media attention, the actor is recently remembered for his work in the animated film series “Sonic The Hedgehog,” based on the famous Sega video game about the fast blue hedgehog . Called to play the evil and charismatic Doctor Robotnik, Carrey was instrumental in making the Sonic titles reach stellar figures at the box office; scoring a very high rating among films inspired by the videogame world and soon returning to theaters with the highly anticipated “Sonic The Hedgehog 3”.
After the sad announcement of his retirement in 2022, the star is now back in the spotlight, showing that he doesn't want to end his cinematic experience just yet. During the preview of the second Sonic movie, he said: "I'm pretty serious about retiring. It depends. If the angels bring me a script written in gold ink that says it's really going to be important to people, I might continue. But right now I'm taking a break."
Back on the subject, Carrey walked back his previous statements during the London preview of “Sonic The Hedgehog 3,” saying: “That might have been hyperbole. You can never be sure about these things. When I said I was retiring, it was more about wanting to take a break. Once a good idea comes along or a group of people you really enjoy working with, things tend to change.” The idea of resuming work if a good opportunity were to arise is linked to considerations expressed in another interview with ComicBook, where he announced that he would be open to playing The Mask or the Grinch again, but on one condition: “Oh my God, it has to be the right idea. If someone had it, I guess… It’s not really about the money. I’m joking about the money… But you never know. You can’t say anything definitive about these things.”
On the same subject, specifically alluding to the possible sequel to “The Grinch,” he added: “Oh, my goodness, if we could just figure out the right way to do it… The problem is that on the days when I was in the costume, I had a ton of makeup on and I could barely breathe. It was an extremely painful process. But I always thought about the kids. It’s for them, it’s for them. And now, with motion capture and other technologies, I could do everything differently. Today, anything is possible.”
Even on his return to the Sonic series, the star did not hold back from jokingly expressing some considerations: " I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of an exaggeration. And, you know, it's just... I bought a lot of stuff and I need money, frankly." And after all, there would be no reason to blame him, considering that the series has earned Paramount over 800 million dollars worldwide. Also from the response to "Sonic The Hedgehog 3" - which from the first reviews seems to be the best chapter of the trilogy - we will try to guess which path the star will take in the near future, limiting himself to brief appearances or perhaps aspiring to a return to the big screen as a leading actor.
