«Being Italian, being European, and being a patriot is not tied to seven generations, but to who you are».
This was stated by the coordinator of Forza Italia and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, speaking at the Rimini Meeting, thus further fueling the discussion within the centre-right on the ius scholae , or Italian citizenship for young people of foreign origin upon completion of a course of studies in our country.
"I am neither a dangerous subversive nor a left-wing extremist, but I say that we must look at reality for what it is. I insist on education, on identity, on culture, because if you accept being European in substance, you are Italian and European not because you have white, yellow, red or green skin, but because inside you you have those beliefs, because you live those values", added Tajani.
Forza Italia's openness to the ius scholae , supported by the centre-left opposition, does not find agreement among the other forces in the majority, FdI and Lega .
"It is not a priority and it is not on the government agenda. I do not want to create controversy. Italy is the European country that grants more citizenships than any other", the position of the Lega leader Matteo Salvini. On the same wavelength Tommaso Foti (FdI): "This topic is not in the government program and it is not even in the individual party programs. The voters
they voted for a program: it is legitimate to discuss issues external to the program, but there is a well-founded doubt that this is a specular argument of the opposition to create confusion in the majority".
