"The social pact and the generational pact are breaking down, it's now clear. It's therefore necessary to address the essential guarantees for the Italian population: the right to housing, protections for workers, and efficient public transportation."

Thus stated the mayors, all center-left, of Rome , Florence , Bari , Bologna , Turin , Naples , Milan , Genoa , and Cagliari . "We say an absolute no to violence and destruction, in which we will never be complicit. Now is the time for the institutions to join forces and for everyone to take responsibility. We ask the government to convene the mayors as soon as possible."

The joint declaration of the center-left mayors of major cities is signed by Roberto Gualtieri, mayor of Rome, Sara Funaro, mayor of Florence, Vito Leccese, mayor of Bari, Matteo Lepore, mayor of Bologna, Stefano Lorusso, mayor of Turin, Gaetano Manfredi, mayor of Naples, Beppe Sala, mayor of Milan, Silvia Salis, mayor of Genoa, and Massimo Zedda, mayor of Cagliari.

The mayors also say that "our cities from north to south are suffering due to the high cost of living and all that it entails. This situation is putting our communities to the test, heightening tensions, and deserves immediate responses."

"Right now, there are production segments that are better off staying put than working, especially in Southern Italy, due to the sudden increase in energy costs," they add.

The request to the government is addressed specifically to Minister Piantedosi and Undersecretary Mantovano, responsible for public order: "Pointing fingers at each other will not lower the cost of gasoline, nor will it reduce the tensions that exist in our country," the mayors conclude.
