Andrea Moretti, the 22-year-old worker who died last night at the Colosseum, was reportedly found wearing a harness but without the rope attached. These are the first details emerging from the investigation by the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office, coordinated by Deputy Prosecutor Antonino Di Maio.

The rope was not found broken, but a technical assessment will be conducted to reconstruct the events. Two other workers, including the victim's brother-in-law, were present on the construction site at the time of the accident. They were interviewed by investigators.

Furthermore, according to reports, a series of documents, including those relating to the contract, have been acquired from the Colosseum Archaeological Park. Inspections will also be conducted on the training of workers who have been working there for months in preparation for the inauguration scheduled for October 9th. Video surveillance footage has also been acquired.

The family business

The young man worked for the company Quintilio Moretti srl, located in Tottea, a hamlet in the municipality of Crognaleto, in the province of Teramo, a town on the eastern slopes of the Monti della Laga mountains, along the upper Vomano valley. Andrea was originally from Tottea. For the company, this is a tragedy within a tragedy because Andrea Moretti, in addition to sharing the same surname, was also related to Carmine Moretti, the 49-year-old owner of the company founded by his father Quintilio in 1968.

The well-known and respected entrepreneur, like all the workers, is in shock and refuses to comment on the incident for now . Carmine Moretti has been at the helm of the company since the death in 2021 of his father, Quintilio, who had started the business by employing many young people from the mountain village, many of whom later went on to set up their own businesses. And while everyone, from unions to politicians, is calling for clarity, Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli has ordered, starting last night, a halt to all work at the Colosseum until further notice . The Flavian Amphitheater has been closed as a sign of mourning, and a wreath has been laid at the site of the accident.

The drama

The tragedy occurred shortly after midnight when the 22-year-old, who was working on the installation of a new lighting system at a height of about 10 meters, fell from scaffolding . Attempts to resuscitate him by Ares 118 personnel were unsuccessful. Carabinieri from the Central Rome Company and the Investigative Unit, the coroner, the prosecutor on duty, and personnel from the Labor Inspectorate and the Spresal Local Health Authority (ASL) responded to the scene.
