A 28-year-old woman choked to death after a bite of bacon sandwich got stuck in her throat . The tragedy unfolded in a matter of minutes around lunchtime on August 14, in a small villa in Capodimonte, in the Viterbo area, where Rachele Ferrara lived with her parents and two young children, a 5-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl.
Rushing to the hospital and rushing her to hospital was futile; the 28-year-old died after four days of agony . From what we know, Rachele was eating lunch when a morsel suddenly got stuck in her throat, blocking her airway. At that point, her father, a retired Carabinieri deputy sergeant and now a Red Cross volunteer, intervened and immediately came to his daughter's aid, attempting to expel the foreign body, including using the Heimlich maneuver. But this didn't work either , and so he continued with resuscitation techniques for nearly 20 long minutes, during which Rachele's brain was deprived of oxygen.
Meanwhile, the 118 emergency medical service, alerted by the family, arrived on the scene. Given the seriousness of the young woman's condition, the doctors ordered her transport by air ambulance to the Santa Rosa Hospital in Viterbo, where Rachele arrived within minutes, but in a desperate condition. The young woman was admitted to intensive care for four days until the doctors announced to the family that she was brain dead. As a final act of love, the family opted to harvest Rachele's organs , which, in this way, could give new hope to others.
The entire town of Capodimonte is already rallying around the 28-year-old's family, as only a small community can do, where keys are still left on the doorstep. No music venues on the beach in the small town on Lake Bolsena have played music. Even the concert scheduled to celebrate the summer has been canceled. A message of sympathy for the family appeared on the Municipality's social media profile: "In the midst of our deepest sorrow," the post reads, "Rachele's organ donation takes on the extraordinary value of a gift of life and hope. The entire community extends its heartfelt condolences to the Ferrara family."
