Adopting a senior dog or cat, especially during the winter months, can make the difference between a long wait in a shelter and a new life filled with joy and love. This is the spirit of the " Adopt a Senior Pet " campaign, promoted by Quattro Zampe in Famiglia , the free portal that connects prospective adopters with dogs and cats in shelters throughout Italy.
The initiative, supported by Gaia Animali & Ambiente , aims to give greater visibility to older animals, often overlooked despite their gentle nature and the deep affection they offer . Many of them spend years in shelters and catteries waiting for a family, and with the arrival of cold weather, they are among the most vulnerable. The campaign was created precisely to offer them a second chance and a future in the warmth of a home.
"The cold doesn't make any noise, but in the shelter it's felt loudly. A senior dog doesn't ask for much: just not to shiver alone," is the appeal of Gaia president Edgar Meyer. "With the Adopt a Senior Animal campaign, we're promoting awareness that adopting a mature animal isn't an act of pity, but an act of profound respect and love," explains portal founder Loredana Verga. Why adopt a senior dog or cat? "There are many reasons," replies Edgar Meyer. " They're calmer, more polite, and affectionate . They have simple needs and a relaxed routine. They love the serenity of home, the closeness of humans, and can easily adapt to family life." Not only that. "Every day with them is a gift: you give back with all your heart all the trust they receive. Adopting a senior dog means restoring their dignity, serenity, and human warmth after an often difficult life. But it also means discovering a discreet companion, full of gratitude and genuine love," Meyer emphasizes. Now, at Quattro Zampe in Famiglia, it's the turn of older dogs, too often forgotten and "invisible" in kennels compared to puppies .
