He turned himself in but says he had nothing to do with the death of his wife, who was stabbed to death at home.
The husband of Vasilica Potincu, the 35-year-old Romanian woman killed in Legnano, in the province of Milan, turned himself in to the Carabinieri yesterday because he was wanted for other crimes committed in the past in Romania. The man, a 38-year-old truck driver, had a European arrest warrant for predatory crimes and crimes against property issued by Romania.
"I have nothing to do with this story," the man told the military of the Brescia Arma, where he turned himself in, maintaining his innocence. No action has been taken against him for the murder but investigators are not ruling out any hypothesis at the moment, not even that, by turning himself in, he could have sought a quick extradition.
The investigation conducted by the Carabinieri of the Legnano company, and coordinated by the public prosecutor of Busto Arsizio (Varese) Ciro Caramore, continues shrouded in the utmost secrecy.
The victim, an escort, lived with her 14-year-old son in Cinisello Balsamo, but was a prostitute in the house on Via Stelvio, in Legnano, where she was found dead on Sunday afternoon. A neighbor discovered the brutal crime. Out for a Sunday walk, the woman became suspicious after noticing the door of the apartment open. At that point she decided to go in to check that everything was normal and found herself in front of the terrible scene: the 35-year-old lying lifeless on the ground in a pool of blood . In shock, the woman ran back to her house and called 112, immediately raising the alarm.
The apartment is located in a quiet area of the city and had been rented by a third person who is currently being investigated. No signs of forced entry or other elements that suggest a robbery gone wrong were found. There were several hundred euros in the house and the signs of a struggle, according to initial investigations, are attributable to the crime. Among the hypotheses of the Carabinieri investigators is that the crime may have been the work of a customer. The woman was found naked and with a towel over her face around 2:30 pm on Sunday. She was killed by a series of stabs, at least five or six, probably inflicted with a kitchen knife. Whoever killed her then left the knife used for the crime stuck in the body's back.
Investigators are interviewing neighbors to see if they saw or heard anything suspicious during those hours . The weapon used to kill the 35-year-old is now being examined by forensics: if, as investigators hypothesize in this first phase, it was indeed a crime of passion, the killer would not have used gloves. Therefore, the knife could have the killer's fingerprints. Checks will also be done on the woman's cell phone: it is very plausible that the smartphone, which the 35-year-old probably used to manage her appointments, could reveal a lot about the last meetings scheduled between Saturday and Sunday, and about the calls and messages received. There are also threats on file, but they are said to be dated, and these are also being examined by investigators. Also being examined are the cameras installed in the area that could have captured images important for the investigation.
