A two-year-old girl died on Saturday in Borgo Valbelluna, in the province of Belluno, a few hours after being discharged from the Santa Maria del Prato hospital in Feltre, where she had been taken on Friday evening for respiratory problems.
The Mattino di Padova and the Gazzettino wrote about it.
The Belluno Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation, currently against unknown persons, and ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Ulss 1 Dolomiti has launched an internal investigation. According to newspaper reports, the little girl had been experiencing feverish symptoms for several days, including a cold, cough, and shortness of breath.
On Friday evening, her parents, concerned about her worsening condition, took her to the pediatric emergency room in Feltre, where she was examined and a series of tests were performed. Following the tests, since the child did not appear to have any significant problems and her parameters were stable, she was discharged on Saturday with treatment . However, in the afternoon of the same day, the little girl's condition suddenly worsened: she began to struggle and felt violently ill.
Emergency services were unable to save her. The family filed a complaint requesting a determination as to whether her condition was more serious than medical personnel had estimated. The Belluno Prosecutor's Office has entrusted the autopsy to medical examiner Antonello Cirnelli of Portogruaro, which will be performed in the coming days.
In a statement, the local health authority, Ulss 1 Dolomiti, said it was "deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of the little girl" and "offers its deepest condolences to the family." "As is standard practice," the Belluno health authority, which oversees the Feltre hospital, added, "an internal investigation has been initiated to determine the details of the incident and the possible clinical causes of death."
