Tragedy struck on Via Ruggero Marturano in Palermo. Two workers renovating a building fell from a crane on the tenth floor and died. The workers fell from the overturned forklift. A third worker reportedly survived by landing on the tires of a tire shop.
An employee at the Gammicchia tire shop was also injured in the accident. The basket the deceased workers were working on fell onto the shop's roof, hitting the shop worker as well.
"The workers were in the basket carrying out work on the facade and balconies when they fell onto the tire shop's roof. Three employees were saved by the tires that stopped the basket from falling," said a resident of the area where two workers died in Palermo. "The toll could have been worse."
Hundreds of people flocked to Via Marturano. Today, not far from the scene of the massacre, there is a very crowded local market.
