Around 100 protesters stormed the Turin offices of the daily newspaper La Stampa on Via Lugaro yesterday afternoon, around 2:00 PM . The incident occurred on a day when the offices were empty, as the journalists had joined the strike called by the trade union for contract renewal.
The protesters entered the editorial office when a more violent segment of the general strike march broke away.
They reportedly moved as if in an assault, shouting "Free Palestine" and "Journalists complicit in the arrest of Mohamed Shahin in the CPR," a reference to an imam from Turin, for whom an expulsion order had been issued in recent days.
Inside the newspaper's headquarters, graffiti was spray-painted, and manure was thrown at the gates. Piles of newspapers and books were knocked off desks by protesters, some of whom were masked, chanting slogans such as "Terrorist journalist, you're first on the list" and "Journalist, I'll kill you."
President Mattarella expressed his "solidarity" and "firm condemnation" of the action against the newspaper.
Prime Minister Meloni telephoned the newspaper's director, Andrea Malaguti, to express her solidarity with him and all the newspaper's journalists for a very serious incident that deserves absolute condemnation.
