A 55-year-old truck driver died after being hit by a car on the A1 motorway, near the San Nicola La Strada service area in the province of Caserta, while he was on foot participating in a truck protest over high fuel prices.

The convoy of heavy vehicles was stopped on the right shoulder of the motorway, a few kilometres before the Caserta Sud junction, and the 55-year-old, a resident of the Naples area, was in the free lane, engaged in a sort of filtering of trucks, when he was hit by the vehicle, whose driver stopped and was reported.

The Highway Police arrived at the scene of the accident and conducted an investigation. The truckers' protest, organized by Trasportounito for April 20th to 25th against high fuel prices, ended shortly before 5:00 AM.

"The arrest began at midnight, and the protests were being prepared when a car speeding near Caserta hit a small-time owner who was organizing the protest, and he died," says Maurizio Longo, secretary general of Unatras. "From dawn, we gradually began to lift the arrest because this event shocked us. He was a young man with a family."
