A 10-year-old boy died last night while playing in Val Venosta, South Tyrol . The accident occurred around 5 p.m. in Laudes, near Malles, as reported by the Alto Adige and Dolomiten newspapers.

The boy was with a friend. After spending time at the village playground, the two decided to climb a rock face in the nearby woods. While climbing, one of them slipped and fell several meters, dying instantly. The friend was recovered by rescuers virtually unharmed. The Carabinieri and the Guardia di Finanza also responded to the scene.

The other boy was airlifted to the hospital for further evaluation.

News of the tragic accident spread throughout the valley last night. The Laudes volunteer firefighters, who responded to the scene to recover the dead child, canceled a Christmas party scheduled for this afternoon at their fire station.

This is the second death in the Venosta Valley in just a few weeks. In October, a 19-year-old died in Glorenza after being struck by a bronze statue he was climbing onto. The accident occurred around 3:00 a.m. The boy, Leon Moser, a 19-year-old from Tubre, was with some friends when he climbed onto the fountain in Piazza Municipio.
