Christmas Eve lunch turned tragic for a family in Settimo Torinese, where a 47-year-old man choked to death on a bite of panettone.

It happened yesterday around 2:30 pm during lunch with relatives at their home in the Borgo Nuovo neighborhood.

The victim, Giovanni Lopez, was at his parents' home. A piece of panettone blocked his airway, prompting immediate emergency medical assistance. Unfortunately, the desperate resuscitation efforts performed by paramedics were unsuccessful; there was nothing that could be done for the 47-year-old.

The Carabinieri and the medical examiner from the ASL were also on site.
