Three dead: this is the tragic toll from the avalanche that triggered this afternoon, around 4:00 PM, in the Ortler area, near Cima Vertana, in South Tyrol. The avalanche swept away a group of five German ski mountaineers.

Operations are still ongoing, coordinated by the Solda Mountain Rescue Station with the support of neighboring Alpine Rescue Stations, the Guardia di Finanza mountain rescue service, the helicopter rescue service, and the valley firefighters. Seven people were involved in the avalanche that occurred this afternoon in the Ortler mountain range in South Tyrol.

The victims, as mentioned, are three German ski mountaineers: a 30-year-old man and woman, and a 50-year-old man, who were part of a single group. They were swept away while climbing and were recovered lifeless by rescuers. The collapse appears to have been sudden and left no survivors. The avalanche also affected four other people, who were in a second group, two of whom are still missing.
