The Council of Ministers approved the decree law with measures to provide economic support and mitigate the effects of the ongoing increase in fuel costs, as well as tax measures. The excise duty cut on diesel fuel has been extended until October 5th with a decaling mechanism. And the road tax for small and medium-sized cars and motorcycles has been abolished—for 2027 only.

Under the measure, worth approximately €2.3 billion, small and medium-sized vehicles up to 80 kW and all motorcycles and mopeds will be exempt from road tax. The exemption, as mentioned, applies to the payment period between January 1st and December 31st of next year.

"If multiple vehicles qualify for the tax relief," it is specified, "the exemption is granted for only one of them and is applied to the vehicle with the lowest power output, expressed in kW. If the power output is the same, the exemption is applied to the vehicle for which the lowest vehicle tax would be due, in the absence of the tax relief."

"Today the government is eliminating one of the taxes most hated by Italians," commented Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
