A car carrying its driver suddenly collapsed into a sinkhole along the provincial road in the municipality of San Lorenzo (Reggio Calabria), in the Santa Maria area. The mayor of San Lorenzo, Sandro Polimeni, announced the incident on his Facebook page, also explaining that initial reports indicate the driver did not suffer serious injuries, although he was taken to the hospital. The area was hit by heavy rain yesterday, causing damage in Melito Porto Salvo as well as in the surrounding areas, Montebello Jonico, and the towns of Saline Joniche, Masella, Borgata Rocca, and Fossato Jonico.

" This morning we narrowly missed tragedy ," says Polimeni. "Only by a fortunate coincidence are we not here today to mourn a human life. I would like to express my deepest and sincere thanks to the Carabinieri, who responded to the scene and who, for hours, have been working tirelessly, with an extraordinary sense of duty, to address an emergency that is bringing our region to its knees," the mayor continues. "The only road connecting Roccaforte del Greco to the sea, through the San Lorenzo area, in the Santa Maria area, has been completely destroyed. We are isolated, and the situation is dramatic ," Polimeni emphasizes.
