The plaque commemorating the escape of Liliana Segre as a child with her father was vandalised

Vandalized in Saltrio, in the province of Varese, the plaque placed on 25 April 2022 next to a sculpture that commemorates the passage of Liliana Segre and her father fleeing to Switzerland.

The name of the senator for life was erased with a sharp object: a group of volunteers from the area tried to remedy the situation by rewriting it with a permanent marker.

The plaque will be redone.

«An idiotic gesture - commented the mayor of Saltrio, Maurizio Zanuso - We are preparing to reproduce the plaque and protect it with a plexiglass screen to avoid future damage. The hope is to be able to place it on a symbolic day like January 27th, Remembrance Day."

On 8 December, the "Path of Silence" was inaugurated in the area, the path taken by Liliana Segre with her father to seek salvation from Nazi-fascist persecution in Switzerland. Both ended up in the Auschwitz extermination camp, from which she became senator for life survived and of which she became a witness.
