Carmine Siano, mayor of Castiglione del Genovesi (Salerno), was brutally attacked last night in the street by a stranger with a hooded face .
The incident occurred shortly after 8:30 pm on December 26. The mayor was leaving his home to attend a Christmas event when a man who was evidently waiting for him emerged from the darkness and struck him repeatedly and with unprecedented violence, with a crowbar or a stick .
Siano underwent surgery and was taken to Ruggi Hospital in Salerno with a red code. His life is not in danger, but his condition is serious: he suffered a compound fracture of the left lower limb, a compound fracture of the left upper limb, fractures of the fingers on his right hand (one finger was amputated), a wound on his left temple, and multiple extensive wounds throughout his body, particularly on his face .
The Carabinieri are investigating the incident. The motive is unknown, but robbery seems to have been ruled out. The most likely culprit is a premeditated attack stemming from grudges, perhaps related to administrative duties. It's possible the attacker intended to kill him .
Solidarity has been expressed by all political forces. The president of the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI), Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi , sent a message: "Solidarity and support for the mayor of Castiglione del Genovesi, who was attacked near his home. This act of violence is unacceptable: it confirms the need to remain vigilant towards those who govern the area every day, dealing with delicate situations. Mayors will not be left alone."
"I wish to express my sincere solidarity and sympathy to the mayor of Castiglione del Genovesi, Carmine Siano, who was recently the victim of a serious attack. I extend my best wishes for a speedy recovery," reads a statement from Campania Regional President Roberto Fico . "It is my hope that full clarity will be shed on what happened and that similar acts of violence will never find a place in our community."
