Two people in their twenties were killed and four people were injured, two seriously, in an accident that occurred around 3:30 a.m. on the Jonica state road in the Cosenza province. Two cars, a Fiat Panda and an Alfa Romeo Mito, collided at the Stombi intersection, the junction connecting state road 534, the Cammarata-Stombi, with state road 106. The worst hit were the occupants of the Panda, carrying four young people aged 16 to 20, all from Cassano allo Ionio.

Ambulances from Trebisacce and Corigliano-Rossano, and the PET unit from Cassano Ionio, responded to the scene. Doctors attempted to resuscitate the two most seriously injured, Chiara Garofalo and Antonio Graziadio, but were ultimately unable to do anything but pronounce them dead. The other two seriously injured were transported to the hospital in Cosenza. The remaining two were taken to the hospitals in Corigliano-Rossano.

The particularly violent impact complicated rescue operations. Carabinieri officers from the Cassano Company and the coroner also arrived at the scene to conduct initial assessments.
