The blitz of the Regions - Sardinia included - has failed, at least for the moment, to change the rules on the management of Covid cases, eliminating from the count those who are hospitalized for other reasons and test positive for the swab.
The governors have been pushing for a long time on this ploy to lower the occupancy rates of the Covid departments and avoid the change of band. From Monday, by the way, Valle d'Aosta becomes the first orange region of this fourth wave, while Campania joins the other 14 regions in yellow.
"There is no formal act" to modify the parameters, says the Ministry of Health, recalling that the Higher Institute of Health has already given the opposite opinion. A no to which is added that of the Scientific Technical Committee and the Order of Doctors.
To open the new front of tension between the government and the regions is a draft on which the health commission of the State-Regions Conference is working: "The patient hospitalized for various causes who test positive for Sars-CoV2 but asymptomatic, if he is assigned in isolation to the ward of the pathology for which hospitalization is required, even though it is traced as a 'case', it will not be counted among the hospitalizations in the Covid medical area ". The data must be communicated to the ISS and reported in the bulletin in a new field called "number of Covid patients hospitalized for various reasons", have been asking the Regions for days.
But at the moment nothing will change, confirms Speranza who then rejects how the dialogue with the Regions "is always open"
It must also be considered that Italy is still in an "acute epidemic situation", points out the president of the ISS Silvio Brusaferro, recalling, among other things, that the health services of the Regions are having "difficulties" in sending data in Rome and this causes both an "instability of estimates" and a "difficulty in classifying the risk".
The no also comes from the CTS and the doctors working on the front line. The bulletin, say sources of the Committee at the end of the usual weekly meeting, must remain unchanged since the count of asymptomatics allows you to monitor the progress of the pandemic and identify the variants. Any modification "does not work" adds the president of Fnomceo Filippo Anelli, "we need measures to control the epidemic and not make-up operations".
A clear stop also comes from Gimbe which defines that of the regions as an "inadequate and risky proposal, which only serves to avoid restrictions".
THE REGIONS - According to the Sardinian councilor Mario Nieddu this is a "completely reasonable proposal: that is, if you happen to fracture yourself and end up in orthopedics, then you test positive for the swab to which the patients are periodically subjected, but you stay in the same department, it is sacrosanct that that place is not counted as a Covid bed ".
And the governors insist compact. According to that of Lombardy Attilio Fontana, the change "is absolutely fundamental" while the president of Calabria Roberto Occhiuto speaks of a "logically acceptable" choice. Emilia Romagna, Puglia and Umbria, as well as Veneto, are said to be ready for changes.
THE DATA - About a third of coronavirus positive patients enter the hospital for other reasons, but almost always end up in the Covid wards precisely because they are infected. This is the case of positive pregnant women, who represent the largest percentage of this type of inpatient that appears in the daily bulletin.
Patients who “once entered the hospital require a double assistance line, since they cannot be followed in a non-Covid ward but at the same time they need specialists who treat their disease. We are talking about 34% of Covid positive and non-sick patients, this entails a considerable pressure on hospital companies in terms of resources: the need for personnel is doubled ", underlines the president Fiaso Giovanni Migliore.
He gives the example of pregnant women: "Obstetricians, nurses and gynecologists who, once dressed in protective equipment, certainly cannot go to non-Covid wards".
