A 57-year-old teacher was taken to hospital in Bergamo this morning in serious condition .

The woman was reportedly stabbed in the neck and abdomen by a 13-year-old student outside the comprehensive school on Via Damiano Chiesa in Trescore Balneario and, after the alarm was raised, was rescued by helicopter.

She was transferred to the Papa Giovanni XXIII hospital in Bergamo and underwent surgery: according to hospital sources, her life is not in danger, although her condition remains serious.

The Carabinieri are investigating the incident, which occurred around 7.45am.

"What happened at the Trescore Balneario Comprehensive School is a shockingly serious event ," said Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara . "First and foremost, I express my deepest sympathy to the teacher, her family, and the school. This event demonstrates the need to quickly approve the new, stringent regulations put in place by the government to combat youth crime , and in particular the spread of improper weapons among young people. These measures must be combined with those already implemented in schools regarding conduct and respect, which will soon be implemented, such as the one on psychological assistance."

The 13-year-old was reportedly wearing camouflage pants and a T-shirt with the word "vendetta" written on it. He had a blank pistol in his backpack.

The Brescia Juvenile Prosecutor's Office will handle the matter. Since the student is not yet 14, he cannot be held accountable and therefore cannot be tried . However, security measures, such as reformatory or probation, are expected to be applied if he is considered a social danger.
