Filippo Verterame, the twenty-two-year-old stabbed in the throat during a fight that broke out last Tuesday between two families in the "Le Cannella" area of Isola Capo Rizzuto, died this morning at the Catanzaro hospital, where he had been admitted. Verterame's family, after doctors declared him brain dead, decided to donate his organs.

The fight in which Filippo Verterame was injured broke out due to an argument in the square of the beach club managed by the young man. The fight involved members of two families and left seven people injured, four of whom are still hospitalized. The investigations launched by the Carabinieri to ascertain the dynamics and causes of the fight have led to the arrest of five people. Francesco and Antonio Paparo, aged 59 and 40, ended up in prison after being treated in the civil hospital of Crotone because they too were injured. The other three arrested, Giuseppe Paparo (39), Giuseppe Verterame (57) and Alessandro Bianco (44) are under guard in the hospital where they are still hospitalized for the injuries sustained in the fight.

Following the death of Filippo Verterame, Crotone Deputy Public Prosecutor Pasquale Festa, who is leading the investigation into the brawl, will have to reevaluate the positions of those arrested, identifying which of them inflicted the fatal stab wound to the twenty-two-year-old's throat, and charging him with aggravated homicide. Regarding the circumstances of the brawl, according to initial interviews and witness statements, Filippo Verterame had arrived at the beach in his car along a dirt road, raising dust. This situation particularly annoyed Giuseppe Paparo, with whom an argument broke out. Tempers further escalated with the intervention of other members of the two families. A massive brawl ensued, involving kicks, punches, and beatings.

One of the attackers then grabbed a knife and stabbed Filippo Verterame, who immediately lost consciousness. The young man, after being initially taken to the Crotone hospital, was airlifted to Catanzaro, where, after two days of agony, he died this morning. Deputy Prosecutor Festa ordered an autopsy on the twenty-two-year-old's body. This morning, before the young man died, Verterame's mother, Angela Giaquinta, posted a message on social media defending her son.

"Filippo," the young man's mother wrote, "is not a thug as some would like to portray him on social media, but a good guy who for three years dedicated himself to helping the most vulnerable by managing On The Beach, Le Cannella's first inclusive beach club. A project he was deeply proud of."
