What's happening with speed cameras in Italy? Let's clarify.

In the Italian road safety landscape, the past and current years represent a turning point for speed cameras. With the aim of standardizing regulations and practices, the Ministry of Transport (MIT) has introduced significant reforms.

One of the main innovations is the national census of speed cameras, culminating on November 28, 2025, with the publication of the official list on the velox.mit.gov.it portal. By this date, municipalities, provinces, and police forces had to report all active devices, for a total of approximately 3,800 registered devices out of an informal estimate of 11,000 present in the country.

This digital map, available online, allows drivers to verify the legitimacy of a speed camera before contesting a ticket.

In fact, from November 30, 2025, only registered devices can generate valid fines.

At the same time, a new ministerial decree on approval, calibration, and periodic checks was launched and notified to the European Commission on February 3.

The measure establishes rigorous criteria: prototype approval by published decree, conformity checks by accredited bodies, and a ban on use in the event of negative checks.

The data revealed is significant: only just over 1,000 of the surveyed speed cameras already meet the new requirements. Thousands are at risk of being shut down by May 2026. This could trigger a flood of appeals for fines issued by unapproved devices.
