Speed cameras are at risk of being shut down across Italy starting October if the Ministry of Transport (MIT) does not issue an implementing decree by August 19th, initiating a census of the devices by municipalities, provinces, and regions, who will have two months to submit the data to the ministry. Chaos could therefore reign over speed control devices by October 18th. Codacons (Italian Confederation of Road Traffic Conduct) has warned, explaining that starting October 18th, all speed cameras installed along Italian roads could be shut down.
Codacons recalls the provisions of the Infrastructure Decree and highlights "a paradoxical situation created by delays, cumbersome laws, and unnecessary bureaucratic complications . The decree, which, as is well known, was intended to ensure greater transparency regarding the use of automatic speed detection devices, establishes the obligation for municipalities, provinces, and regions to register and report to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport all speed camera devices present in their respective territories, for publication in the appropriate section of the Ministry's institutional online portal."
Local authorities must communicate not only the location and technical data of each device, but also information regarding its conformity, model, and approval . This communication, according to the decree, "is a necessary condition for the legitimate use of the devices." In other words, municipalities that fail to provide the data will no longer be able to operate speed cameras on their territory.
