As a precaution, Civil Protection authorities have ordered the evacuation of approximately 500 people living in areas at risk of landslides in Niscemi, in the province of Caltanissetta.
Around 70 volunteers were sent to the site to assist the evacuated population.
By order of the regional Civil Protection chief, Salvo Cocina, hundreds of camp beds are being transferred from Palermo to the Pio La Torre sports hall to set up shelters for the displaced.
Cocina, in close collaboration with Regional President Renato Schifani, is traveling to Niscemi to directly monitor the situation and coordinate operational activities. Firefighters, the mayor of Niscemi, municipal technicians, technicians from the regional Civil Protection Department, and law enforcement are also on site.
