Parliament's second green light for justice reform. With 106 votes in favor, 61 against, and 11 abstentions, the Senate approved the constitutional revision bill on the separation of judicial careers between prosecutors and judges.
The measure will now return to the Chamber of Deputies (where it was approved on January 16) for a third stage and then to the Senate. Protests erupted in the chamber during the vote, with opposition parties holding signs against the reform. Justice Minister Carlo Nordio was present in the chamber.
The National Association of Magistrates expressed dissatisfaction, and after the green light, it issued a statement signed by the Council, commenting: "The constitutional reform approved today will strip away citizens' guarantees; this is our primary concern. And it's clear that the intent of this reform is to create a tamed and subservient judiciary, one that abdicates its duty to enforce legality."
