A T-260B aircraft from the 70th Wing of Latina crashed this morning inside the Circeo National Park , in the municipality of Sabaudia.
Rescuers found the plane on fire , and inside they found the lifeless bodies of two soldiers. One of the pilots was Colonel Simone Mettini, 48, and the other was cadet Lorenzo Nucheli.
The aircraft crashed during a training mission in the area between Migliara 49 and Cerasella, near one of the park's entrances, in a forest area where no one was present at the time.
CONDOLENCES – "They say a pilot never dies, he just flies higher, but I cannot hide my deep sorrow at the news of the tragic passing of Colonel Simone Mettini, Wing Commander and experienced instructor pilot, and the young Cadet Lorenzo Nucheli, who died in the line of duty this morning in a plane crash near Sabaudia. In this moment of immense sadness, on my own behalf, as a minister and as a father, and on behalf of every woman and man of Defense, I express my most sincere and heartfelt condolences to their families, their loved ones, and the entire Air Force community.
