Sergio Alfieri, doctor of Gemelli and surgeon of Pope Francis, has ended up in an investigation by the Rome Prosecutor's Office for forgery of a public document.

According to the accusations, he would have signed the register of operations but in some cases he would not have been the one to operate on those patients, indeed according to the complaint he was not actually present in the operating room at the time of the operation.

The professional would have formally been in the operating room even when he was elsewhere, on some occasions outside the perimeter of the Gemelli polyclinic.

The story began with a complaint dated February 9th delivered to the investigative leaders of the Nas carabinieri.

The complaint reports incidents that occurred on several days, between July and December in 2022, in which the surgeon was not in the operating room even though he was present.

On 10 October, during the time of the operation, he would have been at the Hilton Hotel for the congress of the Italian Society of Surgery while on 5 December he would have been involved in a meeting with department directors and other doctors.

"I am very calm" was the comment of Dr. Alfieri, who explained that he works "as a team". «If I didn't do this I wouldn't be able to operate on all the patients who come to me - he said -. I don't do the surgery from start to finish but the central part. Is this a crime? I do not believe".

While his defender Carlo Bonzano clarified: «We know nothing about the merits of the matter other than what we learned from press reports. And we have never received any objection or notice from the Prosecutor's Office." «Professor Alfieri, whose personal and professional caliber is known to all – he concluded -, is certain that he has always operated in full compliance with the rules».
