Geneticist Edoardo Boncinelli , renowned for discovering the genes that regulate proper human development and for his intense work as a popularizer, has died at the age of 84. His family and friends have announced his passing.

Born in Rhodes on May 18, 1941, to Florentine parents, he graduated in physics from the University of Florence. His scientific activity was carried out first at the Institute of Genetics and Biophysics of the National Research Council (IGB-CNR) in Naples, and then in Milan, where he directed the molecular biology laboratory of the San Raffaele Institute and the Center for Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology of the CNR.
