"It wasn't me, I don't know who it could have been, and I have no idea of the motive." This is what Valter Lavitola reportedly said, according to reports, during spontaneous statements made before prosecutors at the Rome Prosecutor's Office who are investigating him for manslaughter in connection with the attack on journalist Sigfrido Ranucci. Lavitola later exercised his right to remain silent, but said he was "shocked" by the accusation that he instigated the attack, given the "fraternal" relationship that binds him to Ranucci.

Regarding his presence at the scene of the attack about a month before the events, the suspect claimed that he often "went there to visit Ranucci." Regarding the role of the alleged intermediary, Gomes Clesio Tavares, Lavitola explained that he "didn't send him to Cameroon" and that "he's often there, as evidenced by his passport," and that "he's now in his home country for a carbon credit deal."
